Nazaré is a very popular surfing destination because of the very high breaking waves that form due to the presence of the underwater Nazaré Canyon.[9] The canyon increases and converges the incoming ocean swell which, in conjunction with the local water current, dramatically enlarges wave heights.[10]

Due to the height of the waves, numerous surfing records have been set at Nazaré. In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara, who resided in Hawaii at that time, surfed a then record-breaking giant wave: 23.8 m (78 ft) from trough to crest, at Praia do Norte, Nazaré. On November 8, 2017, Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa broke the previous record by surfing a big wave of 24.4 m (80 ft); for this feat he won the Quiksilver XXL Biggest Wave prize and entered the Guinness World Record for the biggest wave ever surfed.

There has been a marked increase in visitors to popular viewing points for surfing competitions, such as the lighthouse at the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, which has seen numbers increase from 80,000 visitors in 2015 to 174,000 in 2017.
About Nazare
Nazare, named after the Biblical “Nazareth” in the 4th century, is Portugal’s most famous fishing village, now becoming important as well in the world of big wave, tow-in surfing. The tallest wave ever recorded being surfed – by a Hawaiian big-wave surfer – was off Nazare.

Possibly the most famous fishing town in Portugal, Nazaré is unique in many ways. It doesn’t contain the architectural treasures or grandiose monuments prevalent in other Portuguese towns, but it has an atmosphere of times gone by, contentment and traditions which continue to thrive, which make it a special place to visit.

The wooden fishing boats still used today are colourful and narrow with curved prows and decoration evocative of the first fishermen of the area; the Phoenicians, who settled here in pre-Christian times. On some prows you’ll even still see a watchful eye painted – in theory to detect the two most important things to a fisherman; shoals and storms – and many dangle lamps for fishing after sunset. The Casa Museu do Pescador (R. Sousa Lobo) is a small museum dedicated to the fishing population of Nazaré. Contained within a traditional cottage, it has been lovingly restored to show the exterior and interior of the home of a typical fishing family for the early part of the 20th century.
When to go and for how long to see the Nazare biggest waves?
The Big Waves season in Nazare – Portugal, is between October and March (winter season in Portugal, but September and April also work in some years). So that is the best time to see the Nazare big waves.

– For those who need to book the trip in advance, a stay of at least 2 weeks in the region is recommended to ensure that you catch at least one day of giant waves; a three week stay increases the chances of catching big waves days.
In the months described, there’s usually between 1 and 6 large big swells. For more statistics see previous years news history . Even so, there is no guarantee that you will get a good day, but the probability is good.
More information about Nazare
Nazare is increasingly sought after by surfers, photographers and tourists from around the world. As for tourists, whether to see the surf or just to see the incredible strength of the sea, it is always an incredible experience, especially for nature/sea lovers or surfers. This is where the Atlantic Ocean shows all its strength! A unique site, due to the giant Nazare North Canyon – big waves generator , one of the biggest in the world (and there are few). It seems to be the best spot in the world to watch the giant waves from just a few feet away. You’re sure to love watching the giant waves of Nazare live.
If you have any questions, please ask the locals or us through Contact.

The best place to watch the waves is by the Nazare Lighthouse at Praia do Norte.
