This segment of the 2023 Mavericks Awards features Brazilian bodysurfer Kalani Lattanzi, the first person to bodysurf the big wave trifecta: Jaws, Nazare, and Mavericks.
The Mavericks Awards is a digital video performance contest in which big wave surfers and videographers submit their best surf content from Mavericks from the entire winter season. Founded by Jeff Clark and Chris Cuvelier, our mission is to celebrate Mavericks and the brave men and women that surf it. Our values of respect, inclusion, equality, safety and environmental stewardship guide all our decisions and how we operate the Mavericks Awards.

I watch surfer surf Mavericks now and think…meh…I’ve seen a guy friggin bodysurf Mavericks!!! That’s about as ballzy as it gets.

ALL RESPECT TO KALANI FOR RIDING THOSE HUGE WAVES , BUT HE IS NOT BODYSURFING . BODYSURFING IS A PERSON AND TWO SWIMFINS . KALANI HAS A LARGE HAND BOARD THAT HE USES BOTH HANDS ON TO KEEP HIMSELF UP AS HE DESCENDS THE WAVE FACE . THAT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE . LETS SEE HIM RIDE THOSE SAME WAVES WITHOUT THE HANDBOARD TO SEE WHAT HE CAN DO AS A BODY SURFER .

I'm not impressed. Having grown up body surfing and sirfing, body surfing doesn't take a great deal of skill. It is however, very much fun.
Hand boarding is not body surfing. Sorry.

As someone who started bodysurfing at the age of 5 (not that seriously of course), I just want to say that surfing those waves (and with Nazaré so close) is still a dream, which I won't give up.

Watching Mark Cunningham and Redwings out at big Pipeline 40 years ago made a real impression on me. That impression of course was to stay the hell out of there. Love bodysurfing small barrels, but God….the beatings on the big ones are brutal. This cat is next level insanity- that ride at Jaws was legend.
Question: Wouldn't that hurt going that fast w/out a board?

As a boomer who surfed late 50’s & 60’s NS Oahu … especially appreciate your taking bodysurfing to the next level! Back then so many things were unthinkable that are being done now. And love you born Maui but no Hawaiian pidgeon 😂
