Jamie Mitchell at Belharra, France – Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards

Jamie Mitchell (Gold Coast, Australia) paddles into one of the biggest waves ever attempted at Belharra, France, begins the drop and then experiences a wipeout of historic proportions. Shot on January 7, 2014 during the “Hercules” swell along the Basque Country coast. Video by Vincent Kardasik. My cursor is just about the same size as his standing body at 0:28 and I rough measure at least 12 cursors trough to crest. He's probably around 6 ft. tall. You do the math. Of course, wave height is a very tricky measurement. Looks like the cameraman is holding if fairly accurate horizontally, but there's no horizon line or other way to get a good gauge on the angle.

Nothing wrong with the squat stance on a drop that huge, at least until you're on balance and up to speed.  Wish he would have made it.
